I found this terribly hilarious anecdote buried in the New York Times coverage of the assasination of Chechnyan guerrilla terrorist Basayev.

Unlike Osama bin Laden, with whom he is sometimes compared, Mr. Basayev lacked a list of global grievances and the blank messianic stare. He focused his rage against Russia, and, even after the deaths of his family members, often wisecracked.

In 1996 he warned a British reporter that if war resumed, ’’Moscow will be destroyed– not one person will be left,’’ but he then leavened the threat with a punch line, ’’I’m just warning you so if you have any flats there you’d better sell up.’’

I went to check out Matthew Barney’s Drawing Restraint exhibit at the SFMOMA this afternoon with Lisa. It’s amazing how much self satisfaction I manage to derive from such a simple act of cultural consumerism; what’s even more amazing is how rarely I muster the motivation to engage in such enterprises.

I may have subconsciously granted myself a moment of respite from the recent bout of hyper-cynicism and worldly mistrust I contracted during my excursion to Thailand. Either that, or perhaps the art transcended my petty inclinations. Whatever the case, I was duly impressed by the larger than life blobs of semi-molded petroleum jelly and disturbing performance art videos.

Barney’s intriguing background certainly helped smother my inquietude; it’s hard to hate on an ex-football player from Yale dressing up as a satyr and making wacked out movies co-starring Björk.
