Assassination Watch
Published May 4th, 2006 in StumpI’m in the middle of Three Blind Mice by Ken Auletta, which is a surprisingly good read considering the desperate circumstances under which it was acquired, i.e. extreme and excruciating boredom in Luang Phrabang.
Apparently in the mid eighties, CBS and possibly other networks used to have independent Pope Assassination watch teams; TV crews whose sole job was to shadow the pope and provide instant coverage should he fall victim to an assassination.
The inefficiency of that heady era is most striking; these days I’m sure a smart entrepreneur would have consolidated with the actual security detail, and licensed exclusive footage and advertising rights from the Vatican. Can you say EyeVision?
