The test drives continue

A cousin-in-law (is that a real word?) of mine acquired a brand new S2000, and he graciously permitted me to put her through the paces. I’m not sure how many faster, cheaper cars I can drive before I snap. Curse you, my ill-fated addiction…

Infernal Affairs II

I saw Infernal Affairs II (or Infernal Affairs I, as it is known by the more rationally minded among us). This series kicks ass. It’s definitely heavily derivative of the Godfather movies - consider, for example, the coordinated assasinations of the family heads - but the gorgeous cinematography and head-scratching plot twists more than make up for such detractions in my mind.

Oh also “it’s so awesome”, and “I would never have known about it except for Lisa”, and “Lisa is enriching my life tenfold”. I realize that last sentence sounds retarded, but we can’t all be Lord Byron I suppose.

Test drove an STI

Dmitriy let me drive his STI around the block. The sh-t was blazin’ son. It has a sick amount of pull and handles like Hot Sauce.

However, it definitely doesn’t feel quite like a sports car, even though it drives better than most. Personally, no amount of performance can substitute for the je ne sais quoi that comes with sitting less than two feet off the ground.

Hustle and Flow

Hustle & FlowWatched this with MattG last night. It was surprisingly good. The entire sequence with Ludacris was definitely the highlight, followed in close proximity by the recording session scenes. Many minor pieces felt like they were injected explicitly to give the story more universal appeal, which ultimately (at least for me) detracted from the overall quality of the film, but it was still worth watching.
Of course, the real unsung hero of the film is the Caprice.

Howl’s Moving Castle

Sucked.

Interview with a Spook

I guess that should really read Interviewed by a Spook, since he was the one interviewing me. And I guess he wasn’t really a spook; he was actually a pretty nice guy who just happened to work for a prominent national interest doing a background check on a friend. He also didn’t seem to mind, or at least convincingly concealed his displeasure at the fact, that I blew off our first meeting and we had to reschedule for a week later.

At any rate, it was an interesting experience (or else why would I be droning on about it, duh…). As a friend had noted in advance of the interview, they’re chiefly concerned with the perceived trustworthiness, dependability and “honor” of the person in question; i.e. can they be bribed, and do they have US national interests in mind.

The most notable part of the interview in my mind was when I was asked if my friend “maintained regular contact with any Foreign Nationals”. I answered “none that I know of”, which lead to the natural follow-up, delivered in a mistakenly rhetorical fashion: “So you are a US citizen?”

I left the interview with a stronge urge to gorge on All Dressed chips and order Roots gear.

Dope Nike Ad

JumpmanI was watching the Mavericks-Suns game when this came on. I don’t want to give away the substance of the ad itself, but it was wildly appropriate given my cliched sentiment regarding what’s missing in NBA basketball these days. The idea that repetition, imitation and perhaps tribute are all that he left behind for the players and the game is exactly the sort of painfully wistful tripe that resonates strongly with my aesthetic sensibilities.

I was convinced that at the very least, some b.s. open source Web 2.0 project would have this in the works, but apparently not. Outlook Web Access comes close, but the fact that the search folders only show up if you’re using the ActiveX control makes it a non-starter.

Why?
